Via Tortona, Milan
L’edificio oggetto di intervento è collocato lungo la Via Tortona, sulla quale estende la sua facciata principale, fronte urbano di un complesso industriale che si sviluppa all’interno. Il progetto di ampliamento dell’edificio, mira alla massima drammatizzazione del rapporto vecchio/nuovo senza in realtà produrre contaminazioni – almeno dall’esterno – ma dando vita ad una nuova unità ibrida sempre scomponibile, mentalmente e visibilmente, nelle sue parti principali. Il nuovo volume non è derivato dall’edificio sottostante; esso non vuole apparire come la sua prosecuzione in altezza, ma come un nuovo edificio che si innesta sul corpo esistente. Non riprende gli allineamenti delle murature perimetrali, fuoriesce laddove possibile, invade parzialmente la facciata sottostante. La partizione dei serramenti non è derivata dall’edificio liberty, eppure con questa preesistenza dialoga e deve confrontarsi.
Set in Via Tortona, the main façade of the building extends overlooking the street, urban front of an industrial complex that develops on the inside. The extension project of the building aims at dramatizing extremely the relationship between old and new without corrupting either of them – at least not on the outside – but giving life to a new hybrid unit that can always be broken into its main parts, both mentally and visibly. The new volume is not derived from the underlying edifice; it does not mean to appear as its prosecution in height, but as a new building altogether that stands on top of the existing one. It does not follow the alignments of the perimeter walls, stands out where possible, partly invades the underlying façade. The window partitions are not derived from the Liberty building, but it does have to face this pre-existence.
